Dave DIY | Flying With Pets — Things You Need To Know

Ever wondered

what you absolutely MUST know when flying with pets? Below are some tips from professional veterinarians to keep in mind whether you are moving cross country or taking your pandemic puppy back home for the upcoming holidays. Flying with a FURRY PLUS ONE can be nerve-racking, and you want to be sure everything goes smoothly (and that no one poops or pees where they shouldn’t).

  • Jamie Freyer, a veterinarian at HONEST PAWS, says it's important to schedule a visit with your vet several weeks before embarking on your trip to make sure your pet has all their vaccinations — and the paperwork to prove it.

  • Checking specific airlines’ pet requirements to ensure you have everything in order before you go to the airport will save you a lot of time and stress — and most importantly —  that your pet is guaranteed to board!

  • COVID-19 has made the process even more complicated with airlines placing restrictions on pets in planes now more than ever before.

Fewer airlines are accepting pets in the cargo hold, though they will still allow dogs small enough to fit comfortably under the seat in front of you in the cabin.

Still, most airlines have limits on the number of pets they will now allow onboard, and this is generally a first-come, first-served type of situation.

If you have a nervous dog, you can ask your veterinarian about prescribing an anti-anxiety medication for the flight.”
— Dr. Jamie Richardson, chief of staff at SMALL DOOR VETERINARY

So with all of that in mind, here are some things we recommend you buy to make your flight as convenient and comfortable as possible for you and your pet!

DOG CARRIERS:

Whether you are bringing your pet with you into the cabin or putting them in cargo, your first step should be checking your airline's rules for carriers. Each airline has a specific size and restrictions for pets and their carriers. Generally, most require one that is TSA-approved, which allows pets the freedom to sit, stand and turn around comfortably. This soft-sided kennel is perfect for in-cabin use because they are flexible, which is helpful when placed under your seat as well.
This bag has been approved by Guaranteed on Board, a website that partners with airlines, helps pet owners understand domestic airline requirements, and gives carrier recommendations. Other features include mesh panels for ventilation, roll-down privacy flaps, top and side entry with locking zippers, and a bright green "PET ON BOARD" flag for high visibility!

It is vital that your pet is absolutely comfortable for long flights and that they are used to going into the carrier. However, don't switch to a new carrier just before flying because that can be stressful for your pet. This carrier comes with an expandable section that meets your airline requirements. It is a great comfort option that gives your pet more space as well on layovers. The good news is that the small and medium sizes comply with standard airline size rules. It has a removable plush mat, mesh sides for ventilation, and locking zippers to prevent your pet from escaping!

This is CBD for dogs. Before you purchase, ask your vet first and see if it's okay for your furry friend! ElleVet science products are a reputable brand that invests in strict quality control and research through veterinary institutions. Whether it be traveling, 4th July fireworks, or just a long car ride, these chews will have your pet calm, cool, and collected. I'd suggest doing a "trial run" with your pet a few days before the trip to ensure they are okay taking this.

Last but not least, this puzzle-style chew toy for your doggo! If you are traveling with a pup, chew toys will help keep hyper dogs quiet and busy during a flight. Their ears can pop during the ascent and descent just like ours do, so having something to chew on will help prevent this. BRILLIANT.
