Ludlow and Rivington to finally(!) officially be named in honor of MCA, Mike D, and Ad-Rock
The timeline:
2014: A New York community board rejected a proposal to rename the Lower East Side corner of Ludlow Street and Rivington Street made famous on the cover of Paul’s Boutique as “Beastie Boys Square.”
2022: Yes, eight years later, a renewed application for the renaming has been approved by the New York City Council, reported here by PIX11.
Pending Mayor Eric Adams’ signature on the bill — the street sign honoring Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, and the late great Adam “MCA” Yauch will finally come to fruition.
You can largely thank LeRoy McCarthy who previously got a special mural commemorating the 25th anniversary of Paul’s Boutique approved at the same spot in the LES. And in 2013, a Brooklyn Heights park was renamed Adam Yauch Park, too.
McCarthy also successfully campaigned to establish A Tribe Called Quest Boulevard in Queens at the corner of Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street in the St. Albans neighborhood which was later renamed after Phife Dawg—and Boulevard De La Soul in Long Island.
So a big round of applause to one tenacious Mister Leroy McCarthy!
