Locals in Bushwick and around the city say that the amount of neighborhood package thieves is still on the rise.
They rip through boxes hoping to find something valuable and all too often, steal entire packages regardless of whatever is inside. Whether you are waiting for new clothes or an art print, it can often feel like no package is sage from porch pirates. New Yorkers know this exact feeling all too well. There's always stress and anxiety surrounding the wait for packages. A post published in the New York Times revealed that around 90,000 packages a day (!) were being stolen or lost. (We also covered this, and how one neighborhood fought back). Some people even cancel plans to stay home all day to wait for the packages by their door.
But it doesn't have to be this way! Here are some options to keep your packages safe.
Have packages delivered to your workplace
As some begin to return back to their workplace after remote work, the comfort of knowing that you can have your packages delivered to your home is gone. By setting the delivery's job location, your package has a better chance of ending up in the right place then not!
Pick it up from the Bushwick Post!
A couple who had packages stolen time after time founded Bushwick Post, a place where you can direct all your packages to then pick up from. (Due to popular demand, Bushwick Post's mailbox rentals are currently sold out.) However, a concierge service is still available. To have your packages go to Bushwick Post, there's a fee of $3 per package, depending on size and weight.
Pick it up from FedEx
If your package is shipped using FedEx and no one is at home during that time, you can always redirect it to your local Walgreens, Duane Read, or the General Dollar store.
Packages are held at those locations for seven days, after which they will be returned to the nearest FedEx facility. On the website, you can also redirect your package to any other FedEx location in Bushwick too! There are no additional fees for picking up either.
Pick it up from UPS
There is no lack of UPS access points in Brooklyn! These access points are usually delis, grocery stores, or pharmacies.
To do this, set the delivery address to one of those locations. When the package has been delivered, you will receive an email or text message notifying you that the package is there.
Pick it up from the Post Office
Packages that are shipped via USPS can be held for pick up from your local post office. Use the 'Intercept a Package' tool on the post office's website in order to do so. It allows you to stop or redirect the package or letter that is not already out for delivery. The intercept service will cost you $15.95.
