The app on the phone lets you backup stuff much easier. It lets you select which folders you want to pull photos from, whether an entire camera roll or to select albums. It also has the option to let you backup an iTunes library and contacts too and shows you how much storage space is left.
Via the app, you can also have all the backed-up photos removed from your phone once it's transferred to the card too.
